Lurex and Sequins for a sparkly New Year: sparkling dresses are a must-have for those who want to be noticed and shine in their own way at a New Year’s party, but what are the different types of outfits to choose from?
Sequins immediately come to mind when we think of shiny dresses but there is also a less flashy and glamorous alternative.
Better known as laminate, lurex is a fabric made up of several fibres woven together and vaporised with aluminium which gives the yarn a metallic appearance. In Italy, its popularity is linked to the Missoni brand and the famous 1967 Pitti Palace fashion show where stylists promoted blouses in this fabric.
During the fashion show, Rosita Missoni chose to have the models parade without a bra because it was not the right colour and, due to the transparencies created, the spotlights showed the models’ breasts. At the time the choice sparked a lot of controversy and the press wrote: “Missoni’s ideas were the most whimsical and eccentric of the day“. The following year Missoni was not invited back to Palazzo Pitti. The scandal, however, turned out to be more of a gift than a mistake as the brand became a symbol of glam-rock which was appreciated by females and non-conformist women.
How to wear Lurex
The fabric, popular in the seventies and eighties during the Disco Music era, has recently come back into fashion in the way of evening leotards, skirts and pleated dresses. Laminated clothes are perfect for a sparkly occasion where anything goes, such as a New Year’s party, yet at the same time keeping good taste. One of the rules for wearing lurex with class is to combine it with opaque garments so try to avoid patent leather décolleté or mirrored accessories. The perfect colour choice for accessories is nude or tone on tone, with shiny but not too flashy jewels, and leather clutch bags.
Below I have selected 4 PROPOSAL OF DRESSES with laminated fabric and stylistically very different to celebrate the arrival of 2020 in a chic way.
Metallic dress Caipiroska – Pinko
Short wrap dress in metallic green fabric. V-neck with crossed front, wide shoulders and long puff sleeves. Cut at the waist and wallet closure that creates a draped effect on the miniskirt. Side closure with matching belt to tie.
Lamé dress – Missoni
Long sleeve balloon dress made of dense light lamé flounces which create an elaborate optical effect.
Top with flounce and lamé thread – Zara
Aqua green sleeveless top with round neck. Tone-on-tone ruffle detail. Application of contrasting lamé thread.
Laminated nappa leather dress – Moschino
Bustier dress with heart neckline in gold laminated nappa leather with jewel pendants below the waist.
The iridescent fabrics are perfect for the most glamorous evening of the year but the sequins remain the undisputed protagonists for the New Year’s Eve party.
After all, if you don’t show off a shiny outfit on December 31st, it will be difficult to find a better opportunity in the remaining 363 days of the year!
A good solution to wearing garments with sequins is to combine them with something basic but for New Year’s it is possible to make an exception and choose combinations brilliant finishes.
Of course, you can also opt for a more sober look and combine a skirt or trousers with sequins, with a blouse in neutral tones or a black top.
How to wear Sequins
You might now be wondering what kind of accessories to choose when you wear a sequin dress and in this case the combination is easier as you will only need shoes, a bag and probably an outerwear. In fact, with a sequin minidress, you can easily combine black court shoes and a jewel clutch. The ideal choice is to wear the sequin dress with basic accessories and décolleté in the same colour as the handbag. In addition, if you are looking for a nice accessory you can buy a maxi rounded headband in typical 80s style, like mine, from Zara. These type of headbands are back in fashion this season and represent the latest in terms of hair accessories. They also give the outfit a romantic and very glamorous allure.
Beauty tips for your New Year’s Eve Party
As for make-up, there are two classic elements to choose from: red lipstick or smokey-eyes. Red lipstick is great if you want to focus your attention on the lips and for this I would recommend you choose from the countless shades offered by Chanel as the quality of the product is guaranteed.
If you would prefer to focus on your eyes as opposed to your lips, you can enhance your look with a classic smokey effect in either black and grey or bronze and brown colours. The new Golden Land eye palette by the French fashion house Guerlain allows you to create smokey eyes in warm shades of browny gold. Try it to believe it!
My New Year’s Eve outfit
If you want to play down the look you can get inspiration from my outfit and choose a skirt with sequins matched with high heel ankle boots, for a cheeky and decidedly glam-rock touch!
In this proposal I wore a gold-coloured skirt from the Aniye By brand, a Coccinelle metallic leather bag and velvet ankle boots with gold Pollini details. Let me know if you like it and what you think in the comments section!
Wishing you all a very happy and sparkly New Year, with love and glitter.
