Striped dresses have always been a symbol of summer, usually ‘Sailor’ style composed of white and navy, or white and red. For spring/summer 2019, lots of designers have chosen stripes to enrich clothing and accessories, choosing not only the classic colour combinations but also bright, typically 70’s style colours as well. Depending on your figure, you might be better suited to horizontal stripes, or vertical ones. Remember: horizontal stripes are more casual whereas vertical are more suited to evening wear with a casual yet multicoloured style.
So, who suits stripes? Everyone really! However, there are two general rules about striped dresses that are always worth following.
Horizontal stripes are perfect for those with petite figures who would like to increase their shape and accentuate curves. For example, horizontal stripes are recommended for ladies with small chests or for those with narrow shoulders.
Vertical stripes on the other hand, are better suited to ladies with an ‘apple’ or ‘triangular’ figure as they give a slimming effect. In this case, I would advise that thin stripes are chosen, preferibly in a dark tone, and to opt for loose fit style clothing.
Creating the perfect match to a striped outfit is not always easy. My advice would be to break the outfit up by combining a striped garment with a solid colour. An example of this could be a striped skirt matched with a plain white t-shirt or denim shirt.
If the striped item is a jacket, it would be better to go for the minimal look combining the jacket with a plain white t-shirt and a pair of skinny jeans. If the stripes are white and black, they would be best worn with a pair of black or white elegant trousers.
Striped t-shirts are incredibly versatile and can be worn with almost anything be it a pair of white jeans, ripped jeans, or even a vintage skirt!
The best colour to accompany any item of striped clothing is red. Red has the ability to light up an outfit, giving it a burst of vitality. For this reason I would suggest wearing a red accessory, maybe a hat, or a belt to enhance the waistline.
Another very versatile garment to have in the wardrobe is a long striped dress. Long striped dresses matched with a belt that marks the waist, a cropped denim jacket and a low sandal, is a great look for during the day. Or how about wearing the dress with strappy sandals and a straw bag to make the perfect outfit to enjoy an aperitif by the sea. For the evening, why not opt for jeweled sandals and a clutch for a bit of glam.
Black and white striped dresses go well with people with light complexions and dark hair, whereas stripes in shades of blue or red are more suited to those with light complexions as well as light hair.
